Cognitive health is becoming a topic that people cannot seem to get off of their minds. The various diseases that the elderly brain can suffer from have moved to the forefront of health consciousness and surveys show that the number one biggest fear of the aging population is losing mental/brain capacity and becoming a burden on their family and loved ones. Alzheimer's disease for one has climbed up to the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. with about $ 148 billion worth of costs each year. Thirteen million people worldwide are currently affected by the disease with an estimated 10 million of the country's Baby Boomers expected to develop the disorder at some point. A new acceptance of nutrition's role in brain function is rapidly growing as increased nutritional research confirms the importance of supplement usage.

In a survey conducted by the Natural Marketing Institute on the general population of the United States, almost three quarters of the participants admitted that memory loss is a major concern in their lives and of those individuals, only 13% feel as though they are satisfied with the effort that they are making to remain healthy in this area. The importance of using foods and supplements to prevent and treat conditions of cognitive decline is surfacing and thankfully the market for brain health products is expanding as well. More people are becoming aware of the significance.

One product that has documented heart and neurological benefits is CoQ10. It is heavily involved in cellular energy production and is right now the focus of brain-enhancing nutrients. Organs like the heart, liver, and brain have the highest CoQ10 concentrations since they have the highest energy requirements and when there are shortages of CoQ10 in the body the first place that is affected is the heart and second, the brain. Numerous studies on CoQ10 show an obvious halt in the progression of cognitive disorders when present at abundant levels, and when partnered with vitamin E studies show improved brain activity in the affected areas in Alzheimer's disease patients.

CoQ10 is present primarily in the mitochondrion and is an essential part of the body's energy generation. The mitochondrion is known as the cellular powerhouse, and is responsible for the process of how 95% of the body's energy is produced. They control the cell cycle and cell growth, and as the vital mitochondrion age, they tend to develop defects. Along with mitochondrion defects comes reduced cellular energy production, cell death, and dysfunction of the heart and brain. CoQ10, being an essential ingredient in the mitochondrion's processes, substantially helps in keeping them healthy from defects.

Becoming conscious and choosing to make an effort towards cognitive health is essential. Increased nutritional research and the rapid expansion of the cognitive nutrition market offers a way for ensured healthy mental aging.

by Topeka Shawnee County Public Library

If you suspect or know that your teen is suffering from an eating disorder, you are probably doing everything in your power to help him or her. Unfortunately, it's likely that your child is not interested in your help, and could actually lash out at you for offering your advice or ordering him or her to do something else. You need to find out what to do when an eating disorder causes you to fight with your child, because just getting angry with him or her will probably cause an even bigger fight and widen the distance between you.

First of all, heed this advice: trying to change someone else's eating habits is only advisable if you're doing it as part of a treatment plan recommended and guided by a professional. You're likely to cause more harm than good if you try to change someone on your own, because he or she is likely to be suffering from more than just physical symptoms. In other words, an eating disorder has a lot of psychological implications with it.

The psychological portion of an eating disorder is usually the result of abuse, lack of self-confidence, or a desire for control over some aspect of one's life. What this means is that the victim actually has had his or her reality distorted. For example, someone who might have her bones showing could still insist that she's too fat. She's convinced herself of it so many times that she no longer can see herself for how she truly is, and this is one of the most dangerous aspects of it.

So, when wondering what to do when an eating disorder causes you to fight with your child, try thinking about it not as the enemy, but something that you and the child can bond over. As much as you might hate to admit it, your own influence could have pushed your child into having this disorder, and in order for you to help them, you have to evaluate your own role in the situation. If you have told them they need to lose weight, they might just be taking your advice to an extreme.

Commonly question about What to Do When an Eating Disorder Causes You to Fight With Your Child

Question :

How to react when my friend comes home from an eating disorder center?

My friend is currently at an eating disorder clinic/center considering she has one. She is coming home soon however, how do i react when she comes home? Do I hug her or just act like everything is normal and treat her as i would on a regular day, even though I haven t seen her in weeks? Should I ask her how everything is going? I don t know what to say :(
Answer :
Your friend is really stressed out about coming home, trust me. There are a few things you could do to make her transition back easier.
1st: DO NOT comment on how she looks. You might want to tell her she looks great, but please, don t. It s hard to explain, and I m sure it s hard to understand, but this is NOT what your friend wants to hear and could encourage a relapse.
2nd: You should treat her normally. Hug her, tell her how much you ve missed her, but don t pressure her to talk. Let her know that you are there for her if she wants to talk (but don t pressure her into talking), and maybe ask her how she s doing every once in a while. Don t act like nothing happened, and not ask how s she is doing, because she might feel like you don t care.
3rd: Remind her you love her. She s going through a really hard time, and needs your love and support.

Source(s):

I ve been in and out of treatment for years, and I know many girls with eating disorders who would back me up on all of the above.
Question :

When do you know that your eating disorder is out of control?

Well I guess I will get a lot of answers like eating disorders are always out of control or something. But that isn t what I am looking for. When do you really know that if you don t get help it will be too late?
Answer :
You feel unwell and are malnourished. You are below your healthy weight, in bad moods, and even start having signs of malnourishment as fragile skin, hair, nails, pallor, etc.

When people start to say "are you feeling sick?" and even if you know you DO, you tell them you are OK (and they don t believe you)
Question :

What should I expect when referred to a specialist eating disorder unit?

My doctor said she want to refer me to an eating disorder unit for help.

I suffer from Bulimia, and am quite ill purging up to 10 times a day usually. With a history of abusing laxatives, and diet pills. But I am not underweight and do not appear so.

What should I expect. Will they want to do any medical examinations?
Answer :
Of course you will be examined - Bulimia puts you at extremely high risk of organ failure , long term health problmes , osteoporosis , permanent heart damage etc

whether you are underweight or not is the least of the problems - it is what that is going on inside your body and the damage done to it and whether you need referred to any specialist ie cardio , gastro intestinal etc etc
They will need to assess what damage has been done and what measures need to be taken to address these

You will be assessed by one or more psychiatrist s - a second opinion mybe required

What you do need to keep in mind is that yo are clearly extremely ill and they are there to help you - at first you will fight it , be in denial etc -

You maybe prescribed supplements , anti depressants etc to help - no one person is the same

How does Acupuncture work to relieve stress?
How does Acupuncture work to relieve stress?

by Ayurvedic-Medicine

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese method of unblocking "blocked energy" from various pathways to energy called "chi" or "qi" (pronounced as key). Depression, on the other hand, is a mood disorder that affects an individual's normal daily life functioning. It has either psychological or physical adverse effects or, most of the time, both effects.

The standard treatment used by conventional medicine or by licensed medical practitioners is to give relief to a person complaining of depression by prescribing anti-depressant drugs and/or psychotherapy.

However, practitioners of Acupuncture contend that depression is merely a blocking of some of the estimated 2,000 pathways of energy. They do not consider depression directly as a disorder or illness. Instead, they look at depressed person to have imbalances inside the body caused by blocked channels for energy to flow normally around. This flowing of energy is said to be the balancing of all body organs to have a healthy life and that Acupuncture for depression works.

Though Acupuncture was already practiced in China for the past two thousand years, it was only in 1970 that the United States had a few practitioners. But, today, there are an estimated 20,000 certified Acupuncturists, of which one-third are also medical physicians. It is noteworthy to say that the Food and Drug Administration reported in 1993 information that acupuncturists are receiving 9 to 12 million patients per year. The estimated cost of such treatments annually is about 500 million dollars.

Surprisingly, though, Acupuncture treatment per visit ranges from $ 30 to $ 100 and is relatively much cheaper than a visit to a medical practitioner. However, a medical doctor with acupuncture certification would probably charge more than the rates charged by full-time acupuncturists. Inserting needles as thin as human hair over a hundred and more pores into the body is how acupuncture treatment is done. After careful placing of the needles, the Acupuncturist will usually leave for a few minutes and return to remove the needles. He massages some portions of the body of the patient for a few more minutes and then the treatment is done.

Does Acupuncture work against Depression, Anxiety and Weight loss?

A few people told me that it actually works. today I went to some herbal place and some chinese dr...acupuncture specialist I think theyre called...told me that over a series of 10 sessions acupuncture will help me. I am 17 female. I have anxiety and depression and am slightly overweight.
I hope this helps. I have been drinking Valerian tea and want to start drinking St. johns wort? does it help??
Answer :
I know people that swear by acupuncture, but have never had that treatment myself. I believe them when they say it works. I know a lot of people that use Valerian and St. John s Wort, but I don t think you re supposed to use them together.
Question :

Whats the effect of acupuncture on depression?

Ive heard that acupuncture cures depression, unlike meds that only treats the symptoms. I would like to know how acupuncture works and how it can cure depression, since Im starting acupuncture tomorrow
Answer :
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese healing. It works on the energy meridian points along your body. Illness, including depression, evolved when there is a blockage of the energy flow. Acupuncture helps to "unblock" by stimulating and improving energy flow. It does this by the insertion of tiny needles on your body at certain points along the meridian network.

Acupuncture can help with depression. However, you may need a couple of sessions to see any results.

recipe for overeating: Studies outline dangers of mixing stress
recipe for overeating: Studies outline dangers of mixing stress

by Vietnam Plants America plants

There is a great danger in delayed diagnosis of eating disorders in children, primarily because people do not think of children as being old enough to have an eating disorder. A lot of the time, eating disorders occur in adolescents, because their hormones are turning on and they are having a tough time dealing with new changes to their bodies and peer pressure, and in adults who are struggling with their weight. The unfortunate truth is, most diagnoses of eating disorders in children don't come until their condition is life-threatening.

You might be further surprised to learn that young boys are more likely to develop an eating disorder than girls of the same age, according to the Medical Journal of Australia in 2009. Believe it or not, boys and men are just as self-conscious about their looks and bodies as women. Instead of being pressured into just looking thinner, men also have the added worry about being adequately strong and toned. Because society traditionally expects only girls to have self esteem issues that would lead to an eating disorder, doctors often don't even know to look for those signs in boys.

Think about these odds: If an eating disorder were caught early on in a child and treated properly, those children would have a 70% to 80% better chance of fully recovering within a year, and about a 90% better chance of improving those children's condition fully within five years. Comparatively, an adult might only have a recovery rate of 50% in five years. The good news is that children can recover more easily if the signs are recognized, but the bad news is, those signs often go undetected far longer than they would in an adult.

Another thing to realize is that eating disorders are not just about your diet. Having an eating disorder is often a way of coping with stress and anxiety, so children who are watching their parents get a divorce might succumb to an eating disorder more easily, or children who have lost a close loved one.

Ezvid Inc. DIRECTIONS: Use application once per week, for six contiguous weeks, making note of each week's results. The Am I An Alcoholic? application is a carefully tuned psychological questionnaire and analysis system for non-medical use only. Usage of this application on a sustained basis, when paired with proper note-taking, will shed light on possible substance abuse, problem drinking, alcohol dependence, binge tendencies, as well as co-morbidity with depression and anxiety. This is a comprehensive self-test application, however it is not a medical device, and does not replace nor is it a substitute for psychological therapy or drug therapy. When launched, the application asks the user a set of interrelated questions based on a rubric developed by clinical professionals, on topics ranging from substance abuse, binge drinking, depression, anxiety, general health and well-being, and more. Many people suffer symptoms of alcoholism, yet often these people are unaware of the implications of their symptoms. By using the Am I An Alcoholic? App, users whom the application identifies as being at risk for alcoholism may be prompted to seek further evaluation and treatment. Although outcome of the application is not a diagnosis, the results may be useful for both interpersonal relationships and practical self-knowledge.

Commonly question about Am I An Alcoholic? (HD)

Question :

I strongly suspect I have AD HD, and a low I.Q. Is there any hope?

For the past 10 years my life has gone to hell, and it s only gotten progressively worse.

I was neglected and abused as a child by both of my mentally deranged parents, who thought it was a swell idea to hide me away from the world and deny me common human desires, such as friendship and social Integration.

As a result, I literally can hardly speak, forget eloquence; to another human being staring them in the face - I ve made countless life decisions that would be considered moronic and I have yet to find that special something that makes me feel as though life is meaningful.

I currently live in a small town, and needless to say, I have no friends. I am unemployed, stuck living with my alcoholic father who cannot even speak to me like I am a person - he can t even speak to me in complete sentences for christ s sakes - have no aim in life, and have been pondering suicide for approximately seven years. The only thing that made me happy was writing stories about people and places that do not exist, and I m so tired of living like this.

I m oddly reserved and anxious around other people, I can barely function around them, and I m ashamed to say that I resent my family. My father ran away and abandoned us when I was a kid, I was shuttled back and forth from alot of missions when I was a child, I was molested by my grandfather and by an older man when we were living in the mission. I told my mother, but she did nothing. Instead, she though it would be great to screw up her children by telling them she knew people who could take care of us , mafia style - not to mention all the physical, mental, and verbal abuse we endured from her.

I could go on, but it s alot of the same tired old crap. I m perpetually bored and live far below the poverty line. No one in my town wants to hire me, I ve gained a rep as the town retard . The only things in life that make it meaningful to me are the things I cannot ever posess. I used to pride myself on my individuality but now I just want to fit in. There s the rub I guess. I can t motivate myself to do much of anything, and I ve been breaking down in tears every day for the past year or so. I just can t lie to myself anymore and tell myself it s going to be alright. The only thing that stays my hand from taking my own life is fear of punishment from god. I wonder if given enough time and boredom, will that eventually break down...

I value accomplishment, intelligence, and friendship. I cannot delude myself anymore into believing I ever was fortunate enough to have had these things.

I want to make a change, but besides being incredibly shy and reserved, I just don t believe in myself anymore. Any advice besides the usual canned hash?
Answer :
You had a rough life, and it s no surprise that this has taken a toll on you. ADHD is possible, but it sounds like your social difficulties may be a form of asperger s syndrome, which is just a social problem. I d attempt to see a therapist. There are many places you can go for free or very cheap. From there you can figure out whats wrong. Maybe talking out your problems is what you need - some one to unload the burden on. Or maybe you need medication and things will fix themselves.

I can tell by your writing that you re not stupid, you can express yourself clearly, its just from bad parenting that you never developed good social skills. Once you address this, it will be easier to make friends. Being shy myself, I know how scary it is and often avoid people in fear that they ll think I m an idiot

Also, it sounds like you like to write, and that brings you pleasure. Keep writing. You can try applying to online newspapers and such and get paid to do what you like - while never having to say a word to anyone.

Answer :
Hi. I do feel for you. I well know that feeling of looking at the little angels when they are asleep and your heart almost bursts with love. Then when they are awake it is hard to remember how precious they are because of their behaviour. Through it all though we keep on loving them.

As you said you and the child s mother have ADHD, I am sure you will have tried to check this out in your son. I guess he is rather young though to have a diagnosis made. Just a thought, have you tried limiting artificial colors in his food? Like in soft drinks and lollies etc. One of my sister s children used to go quite crazy, running around the house pulling books off shelves etc after eating anything with dairy products in it. If she stayed away from those foods she was fine. Perhaps keep a diary of what he eats for a few days and of his subsequent behaviours. That way you may be able to see if his behaviour is connected with what he eats. I hope this helps. I also think that the advice of the above writer re a chart is excellent. Best wishes

P.S. I am also in recovery and I am so pleased to hear that you are bringing your family up as a clean and sober man. Just think how much more chaotic your life would be if you were still using. Just remember that you are doing well and that you will get through this. Ask people to help you. :)
Question :

I would like some advice on abuse?

Hi, I m going to ask some advice on abuse... And if this is abuse, my little brother and I are victims.

Things given to me:

-Name calling ie: *****, Dumbass, Shithead, and other cuss words.
-Yelling or screaming at (My mother yells at me daily)
-Blamed for problems... ie: Why my parents fight, problems they have, and pretty much everything that goes wrong.
-Threats of violence ie: to beat, hit, and punch me.
- Acts of violence ie: slap, hit, grab my neck,
-Humiliation ie: Calling me fat in front of my friend.
(And about if I am fat or not.. As far as I m concerned I m a healthy weight.. My doctor has tod me I am, the school nurse has...)
-Making me guilty of things that aren t my doing.
-Calling me an awful child.

I m not a bad kid.. I m respectful, I m in every advanced class my school has to offer, and I m an all A honor roll student, concert master of my school s advanced orchestra, and teachers adore me, as do other parents..

Now the things they do to me cause me to cut and harm myself...I ve cut all over my right wrist with a butcher knife last time and they were pretty bad looking but went away in 2 1/2 weeks. And I keep feeling the need to cut more, and more ought en.

As for my brother... He has AD HD... And some doctors think he is borderline autistic..I love him so much.. I m 14 and he is 9..

Things they do to him:

-Threats of violence
-Acts of violence ie: slap, hit, or shove.
-Yell or scream at him a lot.

He does misbehave a few times daily and very oughten.. But he s having challenges.. But he s coming such a long way.. He used to struggle and get C s and D s but now he s getting on the A and B honor roll and doing so much better. He just needs caring, nurturing, and support and guidance. He starts getting better in his behavior and he is such a smart boy.

Whenever they hit or hurt him in any way he starts bawling and crying and gets so upset.. It hurts me so much when they hurt him and I usually take him into my room and check and see if he s got a little bruise or if he s okay.. And I just let him stay with me for the night and talk to him and calm him down and tell him it s not his fault and he didn t deserve it. My parents or my dad specifically hits him over stupid things.. Like if he does somethnig slightly annoying he hits him on the head. My brother is so sensitive and sweet. He doesn t deserve it.

I don t want to turn my parents in but I want it to stop. It s been over 2 years now that this has been going on. My mom is addicted to pain meds and my father is an alcoholic and smoker to add detail..

I love my brother and I want help for us.

Am I just a whiny brat? Or is this abuse?

And you may state your opinions but could you please state them nicely? I would appreciate it.

Thank you.
Answer :
I would talk to your school counselor about this, your doctor, and I would also call CPS (child protective services). It is important to establish a support network for you and your brother, so I would talk to anyone who will listen. You are very articulate so I would tell CPS and the school counselor exactly everything you wrote above. I can imagine that you are afraid and conflicted by reporting ...but, I think it is absolutely imperative that you seek help! My heart goes out to you.
