There are many fields of nursing that can be deemed as challenging; but one of the notable difficult areas of nursing is the area that deals with psychiatric or mental health. Numerous studies have been conducted on this broad sphere and yet many aspects of it remain a mystery to experts. The human brain is a magnificent and very complex part of the man. The illnesses that can be contracted to it sometimes cannot be fully explained. Studies show that one out of three people display symptoms of mental problems. These diseases can be caused by many factors such as stress, drug abuse and depression.
Mental health nurses work with a variety of conditions that concern dysfunctional brain processes. Some of the illnesses they deal with are psychoses and personality or psychological disorders. The principal responsibility of nurses is to form a therapeutic bond with their mentally ill patient and his or her family.
Mental health nurses are versatile professionals able to work in any clinical setting. They may work at hospitals, mental institutions or communities. Their understanding of the theories behind mental health and the illness and their skills acquired from their training make them competent nurses able to provide for the special needs of their patients.
Usually, they are required to be part of a team of professionals whose expertise lie in mental health care. These include arts and occupational therapists, psychologists, general practitioners, social workers, health care assistants and sometimes, social workers.
Mentally ill patients are often misunderstood by society because people cannot understand why the patients are the way they are. This burdens both the patients and families struggling to understand and come to terms with the condition that made a negative impact on their lives. Mental health nurses can be their source of support. They can educate the patient and family of their illness and the ways it could be treated. By showing understanding, warmth, kindness and patience, they are able to make recovery easier, bringing the ill closer to regaining full command of their minds.
Difficult patients are common in many facilities. It is part of nurses' duties to spot a rising tension and douse it immediately before it creates a bigger problem or lead to acts of violence that may endanger other patients and health care workers.
