Overcoming an eating disorder is completely possible with the right kind of treatment and support. An eating disorder is generally characterized by abnormal eating habits and can be in the form of excessive food intake, under eating, obsession with food and weight as well as overeating and then purging through vomiting, exercise or laxative abuse.

The behaviors are highly detrimental to the individual's physical and mental health and need to be addressed as soon as they are identified, due to their life threatening nature.

The cause of disordered eating behaviors is highly debated and can be biological, situational or the result of stress from a diet and image obsessed culture that we live in.

The main symptoms of eating disorders include, but are not limited to: Hiding food Avoiding eating out with people Secrecy around food Obsession with weight gain Large fluctuations in weight in a short space of time Obsession with diets and restriction plans Isolation and withdrawal

Getting Clear on the Actual Disorder

There a number of different types of disordered eating symptoms, including bulimia, anorexia, binge eating, compulsive overeating and several other lesser known ones. The first step is to consult a health care professional who specializes in disordered eating and treatment. You can do some research online or get a referral from your doctor.

What are the different types of treatment options for overcoming eating disorders?

There are several options available for overcoming eating disorders. Each path may be more or less effective for a particular individual, but it is important keep an open mind and be available for trying different treatments.

Therapy

Utilizing the services of a therapist can be highly effective if you are able to find out that specializes in disordered eating and that you can be open with. You can try consulting with a number of different therapists before you make a decision. The purpose of therapy is to address the underlying causes of the disorder as well as bringing relief from the actual acting out symptoms.

CBT for Eating Disorders

Cognitive Behavioral therapy is most frequently used for overcoming eating disorders. It is mainly concerned with working with the beliefs and negative thoughts about their eating disorder which fuel the unhealthy behavior. The aim is to identify the emotional patterns and begin to challenge and combat them

Self Help Support Groups

Support groups that focus on the treatment of disordered eating can be highly beneficial. It allows you to express what you are going through, hear solutions from others and build up a solid support network for times when you are alone and in despair.

Question :

I can t recover from my eating disorder! what do i do now?

I have been bulimic for almost 3 years.
About 4 months ago, i began seeing a psychologist for my self harm and my eating disorder. She helped me stop cutting, but i still had problems with food.

I then started seeing an eating disorder specialist psychologist and she is helping a lot. Even though i can see how the strategies that she is teaching me could help me overcome my problems, but i just feel like the disorder is too strong. Like it is resistant to help.

I dont know what to do now.
Should i just live with my disorder? Or risk hurting myself more by fighting it?

tell both your doctors exactly that.

If you still end up not being able to talk yourself into following through with the right advice and steps... then just like any other addictive behavior you may well need to spend some time in-patient where you don t have the option to choose the wrong choice.

Just like detox for drug addictions some need to have no access to their drug of choice - eating disordered behaviors - for a few days inorder to get started being able to do so for themselves. Be honest with your doctor. And dont be afraid to mention in or out patient if you know you cant or wont do what you need to do to get well

I recovered from a severe eating disorder/s long ago and I feel I m in a good place now to help. It s quite a different perspective to have been recovered for a long time because the healing still carries on many years after freedom from the illness, and seperation from the illness is strong, yet it s still in your heart.
When I was ill I didn t have access to the internet. I didn t get to read blogs (prob a good thing) and didn t get to speak to anyone who d recovered.
Has a recovered person helped you? How? Or if you haven t had the chance, how can a recovered person help you? What would you like to know? What would you ask them? Does your mind want to know details of their weights,intake, behaviour etc or is it more the emotional mental details you d want to know? The strategies of how they overcame the ed? heir treatment? TDo you want to know about their relationships? Or are you not interested in the story of a completely recovered person?

Answer :
Yes, I have received help from someone who has recovered. Seriously, talking to her was the best thing I have ever done.

It helped so much to have someone who understood, and who had been through exactly the same thing. At first i wanted to know about weights and intake etc, just to make sure i was doing it properly, but soon all I wanted to know was how she had got through it.

Let them cry, let them ***** about how much treament sucks, sometimes you just need to let it out. Just make sure they know you understand.

She showed me that recovery is possible, and that treatment doesn t turn you into a fat ugly failure.

She also helped me with how to help my friends and family deal with it. I know I have made things so had for them, but now maybe i can help them to understand.

Strategies of how to recover are so helpful, kind of something else to try for, insted of pro ana tricks. It also helps to have proof that you can come out of treatment healthy, happy and still a beautiful person inside and out.

Good luck helping others maybe one day i can do that too.

Personal experience, so far 5 days into willing recovery. :) Its hard, but i could never do it without someone who has done it before to support me.
