In the past decade, depression rates have skyrocketed, and one in four Americans will suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. Where have we gone wrong? Dr. Stephen Ilardi sheds light on our current predicament and reminds us that our bodies were never designed for the sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, frenzied pace of twenty-first century life.

Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of aboriginal groups like the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Ilardi prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally made for and what they continue to need. The Depression Cure program has already delivered dramatic results, helping even those who have failed to respond to traditional medications.

Question :

Why would anyone prescribe to the philosophy of biological psychiatry?

People that are against biological psychiatry do not deny that people suffer or that they can hallucinate or have delusions. What they deny is that these things are the result of genetic and biological defects.

Why?

And,

- There is no evidence that antidepressants reduce the risk of suicide or suicide attempts in comparison with a placebo in clinical trials (Kahn et al. 2000).
- In fact, rates have actually increased in some age groups and in some countries despite increased antidepressant prescribing (Moncrieff & Kirsch 2006), and when antidepressant trials have been re-analyzed to compensate for erroneous methodologies, the SSRIs have consistently revealed a risk of suicide (completed or attempted) of between two to four times higher than placebo (Jackson 2005).
- Sharply rising levels of antidepressant prescribing since the 1990s have been accompanied by increased prevalence of depressive episodes (Patten 2004) and by rising levels of sickness absence for depression (Moncrieff & Pomerleau 2000).
- Longitudinal follow-up studies (which study the effects of antidepresants over the long term not just the 6-8 week periods the clinical trials look at) show very poor outcomes for people treated for depression both in the hospital and in the community, and the overall prevalence of depression is rising despite increased use of antidepressants (Moncrieff & Kirsch, 2006).
- Over the long-term, people prescribed antidepressants have a worse outcome than those not prescribed them, even after baseline severity had been taken into account (Brugha TS et al, 1992; Ronalds C et al., 1997). No comparable studies exist that show a better outcome in people prescribed antidepressants.

Studies are also showing that the disease model actually increases instead of decreases stigma of mental illnesses.

If you think this is all scare tactics think again. In Switzerland, it is now legal for someone to assist the suicide of someone with a "chronic" mental illness. Who gets to decide they are a candidate for the "Dignitas" euthenasia clinic? A psychiatrist. How? Through unscientific judgment. Through talking. Legal euthenasia of suicidal people as long as they have supposed "defects" says something about a society. It send the message that people who want to die are right and that people with the same things who choose life are "just too stupid to know their lives are worthless.".

I have a question. If you work in the mental health industry and promote this philosophy...how do you look in the mirror?

It would be nice if people actually argued with the facts I have presented. I ve noticed that assuming things about my history, wishing mental illness on my loved ones, or calling me a Scientologist (which I am not) is usually all anyone can muster after being presented with these facts. Kind of bizarre.
Answer :
Almost all the research I know of shows that therapy in addition to medication produces a better and longer term outcome than medication alone. Although I tend to advocate therapy more than medication, which might be self-serving since I am a psychologist, the fact is that there are benefits to medication in the short term. Medication interrupts and calms the mind so that it becomes more accepting of therapeutic suggestions.
I have also noticed that most of your research concerns the treatment of depression. There are many other forms of mental illness, however. Some forms of schizophrenia, psychosis, and bipolar disorder do not appear to be treatable without medication. I have seen medication work wonders with some people. I do not believe therre is a one-treatment cure all for everyone and one cannot make blanket statements.
It has also been found, by the way, that there are biological changes in the brain with therapy as well as with medication. Therapy tends to take longer for these changes to happen. However, my question is, does that make therapy a biological treatment? Such changes can occur through everyday life. I guess that makes living biological - who would have thought that? Certain concepts are inescapable and I guess it really depends on where you want to place emphasis. Of course, health insurance companies love their pals in the pharmaceutical industry and right now they are pushing the biological pill approach to mental health treatment because just talking seems crazy and expensive, and they are concerned with people s best interests, right? There form of treatment that society encourages usually distills to economics.

Answer :
so if i understand you correctly, you are saying that biological causes for psychological problems are not the only explanation. and, you are questioning why it is that people believe in only biological causes + solutions, when clearly there is evidence against biological solutions.

first of all let me just make it clear that drugs work faster than social or therapeutic means. it s just.. a fact. whether or not they work towards the RIGHT PURPOSE, to reduce depression or reduce suicidal tendencies or whatever is a different matter. resolving mental issues takes so much TIME and effort with backsliding, regression, and much difficulty. if you have the money and time to spare, go ahead. most people have circumstances in their lives that require their attention and time, and possibly are the stressors causing/exacerbating their situations. i am not saying you are wrong, but think about this:
this applies to education and basically anything on a mass scale:
WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH RESOURCES, TIME, PEOPLE, MONEY to give every person what they truly need. it s a fact of life. schools are mass scale, nobody ever gets as good of an education as they should. however, children are resilient, and some try hard, and others are just smart.
same with testing of anything- SATS, GREs, whatever. none of those test as well as they should, but how else would you be able to handle categorization on such a big scale? it s the best we can do.

and how are you going to diagnose mental illness if you don t like to use biological/scientific methods? that seems a little hypocritical because many diagnoses for mental disorders document some sort of biological discrepancy.

your euthanasia argument doesn t really make sense to me. if you don t like biological means, why are you arguing against "unscientific judgment of talking?" what else is there? how else would someone communicate to a person who is analyzing their situation other than biological means or talking? the only means left are guessing and nonverbal communication, which we know very little about even in "normal" human beings and even less in "abnormal" or suicidal people.

your arguments are based on ideal conditions, but you really have to realize that this world is not ideal. we have limitations. i am not disagreeing with you because obviously some mental diseases do not have a single biological sign, i am just saying that its much harder to maintain an extreme (all bio or all non-bio) rather than try a mix and help as many people as we can. it just so happens that biological means are more "scientific" at this point, or at least people feel more confident in it. but, try old school conservatives, they dont believe in drugs or mental disease or western science, just man up and get over it is their approach. and how many people are helped by that approach? a few maybe learn to get over it, but our goal is to HELP, not to make people GET OVER things. and so we try to give them biological methods, which by the way with your mention of placebo has a psychological effect even if it doesn t have a biological one.

If your teenager shows signs of having an eating disorder, you may hope that, with the right mix of love, encouragement, and parental authority, he or she will just "snap out of it." If only it were that simple. To make matters worse, certain treatments assume you've somehow contributed to the problem and prohibit you from taking an active role. But as you watch your own teen struggle with a life-threatening illness, every fiber of your being tells you there must be some part you can play in restoring your child's health. In Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder, James Lock and Daniel Le Grange-two of the nation's top experts on the treatment of eating disorders-present compelling evidence that your involvement as a parent is critical. In fact, it may be the key to conquering your child's illness. Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder provides the tools you need to build a united family front that attacks the illness to ensure that your child develops nourishing eating habits and life-sustaining attitudes, day by day, meal by meal. Full recovery takes time, and relapse is common. But whether your child has already entered treatment or you're beginning to suspect there is a problem, the time to act is now. This book shows how.

Commonly question about Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder

Question :

Would you read this story? why/why not?

Clare, a teenager suffering from anorexia, falls in love with Francis, a boy also suffering from anorexia. After weeks of catching glimpses of eachother in therapy, but never talking to one another, Francis finally approaches Clare and strikes conversation. Their relationship flourishes, but becomes trickier over time. As Clare becomes sicker and sicker, she is admitted to the hospital. Francis tries to help her.

(Francis ends up beating the eating disorder because he sees all the damage its done to Clare. Clare ends up dying :( )
would you read it?
Answer :
That s a good basic plot, but add lots of twists and side stories. It s in a really simple form right now, and the ending isn t that good. It s all very depressing. Make a very clear statement and have a good theme. I m not saying sad plot = bad book, but a depressing story is hardly going to hold the attention of your readers. Don t make it too gloomy, but don t make it all sunshine and rainbows either.
Question :

How should I start is this story?

Clare, a teenager suffering from anorexia, falls in love with Francis, a boy also suffering from anorexia. After weeks of catching glimpses of eachother in therapy, but never talking to one another, Francis finally approaches Clare and strikes conversation. (Francis ends up beating the eating disorder because he sees all the damage its done to Clare. Clare ends up dying :( )

Ok first of all,
1) would you read it?
2) do you like both of the character s names? what would you change them to?
3) Any suggestions on how to begin capturing the reader s attention?
Answer :
The majority of research into the incidence and prevalence of anorexia has been done in Western industrialized countries, so results are generally not applicable outside these areas. However, recent reviews of studies on the epidemiology of anorexia have suggested an incidence of between 8 and 13 cases per 100,000 persons per year and an average prevalence of 0.3% using strict criteria for diagnosis. These studies also confirm the view that the condition largely affects young adolescent females, with females between 15 and 19 years old making up 40% of all cases. Furthermore, the majority of cases are unlikely to be in contact with mental health services. As a whole, about 10% of people with anorexia are male and about 90% of people with anorexia are female.

1. I would not really like to read it unless it was written by a psychologist or a nurse and so on, to enlighten me about the subject but written in fiction form so as to make it more readable.

2. Nothing wrong with the names.

3. If you find an interesting name for your book, and if the book s cover is interesting ?? Or start with a boy being anorexic- how queer, how unthinkable ??

Good luck !
Question :

Am I just being a teenager, or is this something else?

For a start, I always worry about silly things, like planes flying overhead, or killers coming to my house. And plenty other things, and I don t know why I worry about such things, but it affects my daily life. I hate social situations, I have panic attacks, shake, my heart beat quickens, and I have short breath. I can t talk to anyone at school, a few friends maybe, but when someone talks to me I feel like i m going to die, I panic that much. Being called on in class is enough to cause a panic attack.
I am also paranoid about others motives, I believe every person will always back stab me, that they re going to hurt me, and this makes it extremely hard for me too trust others and make friendships. But I fear the friends I do have are going to leave me, it s happened before, I can t let it go.
I have depressive phases with these worries, in fact i m usually depressed. I feel terrible, tired, sad, down, worthless, and like I want to just Go to sleep and never wake up. I get really really angry about silly little things. I have a minor eating disorder also, because I don t get hungry, and therefore lose a lot of weight. The thing is, I don t even want to get over this, I just want to die...
The eating problems started with the bullying when I was younger, I have really low self esteem, and fat is all I can see in myself, oh, as well as ugly, terrible person, and yeah. I don t trust myself and I get angry when I can t do things right. It usually ends in self harming, but that also comes up because I believe I deserve the pain, and sometimes it s a coping method.

Something else I thought I d add, which led me to think about bipolar 2.

I ve had too episodes within half a year, when I wasn t depressed. I was high, really really high. I shout and yell, socialize waaaay too much, drink alcohol, have urges to spend a lot of money, I talk really fast and repeat the same thing over and over again, and stay up all night for weeks, not needing the sleep. Yeah, My parents said it s just hormones, so I ll go with it.
That has happened twice, as I said, and the phases lasted 2 weeks once, and the other time was a month.
I ve had weird times where I feel both.

Is this just growing up? Anxiety and growing up? Other disorders?

If it helps, a lot of other members in my family have; Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Depression. My mother has an eating disorder.

I m not looking for a diagnoses or anything, just advice.
Answer :
Some of the things you mentioned lean more toward two of the symptoms of Schizophrenia, which is delusions of persecution and paranoia. But that alone is not enough for a diagnosis. If you truly believe that others are out to get you, you should check with a doctor, but if you know that they are not but fear that they do, you probably just have anxiety. Everything else that you mention leans more toward Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Clinical Depression. My advice would be to see a doctor because it seems to me that you are having problems that are interfering with your daily functioning, and doing nothing about it can only make it worse unless you know how to to make yourself better on your own.

Overcoming an eating disorder is completely possible with the right kind of treatment and support. An eating disorder is generally characterized by abnormal eating habits and can be in the form of excessive food intake, under eating, obsession with food and weight as well as overeating and then purging through vomiting, exercise or laxative abuse.

The behaviors are highly detrimental to the individual's physical and mental health and need to be addressed as soon as they are identified, due to their life threatening nature.

The cause of disordered eating behaviors is highly debated and can be biological, situational or the result of stress from a diet and image obsessed culture that we live in.

The main symptoms of eating disorders include, but are not limited to: Hiding food Avoiding eating out with people Secrecy around food Obsession with weight gain Large fluctuations in weight in a short space of time Obsession with diets and restriction plans Isolation and withdrawal

Getting Clear on the Actual Disorder

Commonly question about Overcoming Eating Disorders Strategy

Question :

I can t recover from my eating disorder! what do i do now?

I have been bulimic for almost 3 years.
About 4 months ago, i began seeing a psychologist for my self harm and my eating disorder. She helped me stop cutting, but i still had problems with food.

I then started seeing an eating disorder specialist psychologist and she is helping a lot. Even though i can see how the strategies that she is teaching me could help me overcome my problems, but i just feel like the disorder is too strong. Like it is resistant to help.

I dont know what to do now.
Should i just live with my disorder? Or risk hurting myself more by fighting it?
Answer :
tell both your doctors exactly that.

If you still end up not being able to talk yourself into following through with the right advice and steps... then just like any other addictive behavior you may well need to spend some time in-patient where you don t have the option to choose the wrong choice.

Just like detox for drug addictions some need to have no access to their drug of choice - eating disordered behaviors - for a few days inorder to get started being able to do so for themselves. Be honest with your doctor. And dont be afraid to mention in or out patient if you know you cant or wont do what you need to do to get well

ps- I applaud you for trying to get healthy.
Question :

Some Qs for anorexic/ bulimic / OCD/ ED sufferers- from someone who recovered 10 yrs ago and found happiness?

If you re suffereing from an ED I feel for you and I wish you well xxxx
I recovered from a severe eating disorder/s long ago and I feel I m in a good place now to help. It s quite a different perspective to have been recovered for a long time because the healing still carries on many years after freedom from the illness, and seperation from the illness is strong, yet it s still in your heart.
When I was ill I didn t have access to the internet. I didn t get to read blogs (prob a good thing) and didn t get to speak to anyone who d recovered.
Has a recovered person helped you? How? Or if you haven t had the chance, how can a recovered person help you? What would you like to know? What would you ask them? Does your mind want to know details of their weights, intake, behaviour etc or is it more the emotional mental details you d want to know? The strategies of how they overcame the ed? heir treatment? TDo you want to know about their relationships? Or are you not interested in the story of a completely recovered person?
I ll truly appreciate your input! x
Answer :
Yes, I have received help from someone who has recovered. Seriously, talking to her was the best thing I have ever done.

It helped so much to have someone who understood, and who had been through exactly the same thing. At first i wanted to know about weights and intake etc, just to make sure i was doing it properly, but soon all I wanted to know was how she had got through it.

Let them cry, let them ***** about how much treament sucks, sometimes you just need to let it out. Just make sure they know you understand.

She showed me that recovery is possible, and that treatment doesn t turn you into a fat ugly failure.

She also helped me with how to help my friends and family deal with it. I know I have made things so had for them, but now maybe i can help them to understand.

Strategies of how to recover are so helpful, kind of something else to try for, insted of pro ana tricks. It also helps to have proof that you can come out of treatment healthy, happy and still a beautiful person inside and out.

Good luck helping others maybe one day i can do that too.

Personal experience, so far 5 days into willing recovery. :) Its hard, but i could never do it without someone who has done it before to support me.

Question :

Can you evict neighbors for being noisy at night?

I don t think I can call police for my neighbors tumping around a night (enought to wake their downstairs neighbor) should I have done this last year when it started? They had the nerve to complaint to the lanlod that I knocked on the wall/ceiling. Hmm not why would someone knock three times at 3am!!! I though it d be less polite to knock on the door (not to mention get dressed) that early in the morning. They drop things, stomp across the floor which actually now rattles my windows. Move furniture (which I once hoped was them moving out no such luck) and favorite is when they run around with their dog it s three againest one here in this little studio. The lastest is running a very powerful fan which even earplugs don t bock out above 33 bds. I even thought of sleeping in my bathtub to try to escape the concougphy but no luck there bath room is above mine. M other neighbors say they never heard me. 3taps on the ceiling with a rubber ball pales in comparsion 2 their daily noise level
Answer :
we must remember that it is our duty to not to disturb the neighbour, and this should be the feeling of every neighbour. im so lucky that my neighbour are happy with me and they are with me. i treat other person as i wish to be treated. so try to teach them this message with kindness.and hopefully they will understand your expressions.

Question :

Read and rate my prologue?

My hearing with Winston Newman was August 18th 2005. Not knowing what to expect, I planned to leave New York City the evening of August 17th; best case scenario, I would be put in jail. In a sobering but strange way, jail seemed like the solution. In jail they have food, clothing, proper lighting, and everything I could possibly need to get my life back together. My plan was to walk into that courthouse, plead guilty to anything they pin on me and take the punishment.

I took the train to a rough suburb of Philadelphia by the name of Norristown. My appearance would certainly shock everyoneI was completely disheveled and dirty. My normally close cropped, jet black hair, had debris and dirt in it, making it look to be a lighter grayish brown color. It had grown in a time when there wasnt a comb or brush in sight.
My clothes where dirty, wrinkled and unkempt, circles had grown around my dark brown eyes and my full figured lips had grown dry and cracked to the point where it actually hurt a bit to speak. I wondered what they would think when I arrived.

As I approached the long set of stairs at the Norristown courthouse, my attempt to sneak inside failed, being that the press and media swarmed.

David, do you think this could be the end of your writing career, before it even began?
Is it true your own father put you out of the house, after the death of your mother?

All these questions they asked made it apparent that my life has become the reality show event of the year. All I could hope for at that point was death. As I walked through the building, my shoes squeaked as if I walked across the ocean to arrive there.

Opening the door with my left hand, I struggled to pull the weighty door fully open. I had to use my scraped, stiff, right hand to painfully assist the left. Once inside the courtroom, many of the spectators had already arrived early to the big trial of the year. Curiously they waited for the next chapter in this storied circus would be. They arrived so early that they had front row seats of the train wreck named David Summers. As I walked through the gallery of the courtroom, I didnt look any of them in the eyes at first, but I knew they caught a glimpse of me, because the noisy chatter died down. When I did look around, I could tell from the befuddled looks on their faces that they were in utter shock to see me in this state. Some stared subconsciously; their mouths gaping wide open in shock. I saw my friends Brittany and Brandon sitting next to each other, they both sat fidgety in their seats, that is, until they caught a glimpse of me. Little did any of them know, I was going to surrender myself.

Brittany put her hand over her mouth and tears welded up in her eyes, while Brandon seemed to brave my appearance and embrace her. My revengeful, spiteful, father sat in the corner with a smug grin on his face.

How did I get to this place of being a homeless man, desperate for the luxuries of Prison, when three years ago, I was in a very wealthy family? I mean, my mother was a Movie Producer and my father a successful Politician.

The sound of the courtroom doors behind me swinging open bounced off of the wooden interior of the court room, and through all the chatter in the room, I heard the door swing back closed. When I turned around, I saw Winston Newman walk in with his huge entourage. With a deliberate swagger, he made his way to the prosecution bench. As he got closer to me, my appearance made him slow down his already slow pace. His face squeezed, as if he just ate a particularly sour lemon wedge, he seemed taken back.

They sat their briefcases and papers on the prosecutors desk. Winston brought a team of five different attorneys with him, undoubtedly the best in the nation, and there I stood again, with nobody. The only thing I had with me was a stench that came off my body. Winston had a gray suit that hugged his enormous upper body, with a white shirt and a brilliant red power tie. His slicked back hair accompanied his clean shaven face. He was a rock; an immovable rock. He represented something you go around not through.

As the courtroom quieted, you could hear whispers that were surely in reference to me and my appearance. My beard itched because I hadnt shaved in months, or showered in weeks. All I wanted was for the session to get started, so I could surrender myself to a better arrangementJail.

The moment came right before the trial was to begin; the tension built, all I could think about was my impending, failure due to come by the end of the day.

At that, I heard the courtroom doors open again. Before I got a chance to glance behind me, I heard high heels tapping in a heart pounding familiar rhythm, the room became silent and an electrical p
Answer :
I like your writing and style.
You captured my interest.
I have a few suggestions, if you will:
1. Take the last sentence in the first paragraph and place it first, that is the first sentence in your prologue.
2. Go though this piece and question each significant word: does it way what you mean it to?
Examples: 6th paragraph "Some stared subconsciously." Do people really stare subconsicously?
Next to the last paragraph: "failure due to come by the end of the day" Do you mean "failure" or tragedy or disaster? If failure, what does he fail at? Being sentenced?
I m not trying to be picky but to point out the need to work harder at diction.
But I think you have potential as a writer, so that s why I bothered to mention these things.

Jen's story

It was 6 months ago when I realized my daughter, Jen, had an eating disorder. Jen has always been a picky eater. But I started to see that she moved food around her plate. And she never ate very much. She exercised all the time - even when she was sick. And she was sick a lot. She became very skinny and pale. Her hair thinned. Jen became moody and seemed sad - I thought that's what teens act like.

But once I put the signs together, I talked to Jen about anorexia. She denied she had a problem. But I knew she needed help. I took her to our doctor, and she asked me to put Jen in the hospital. Jen's treatment helped her return to a normal weight. It's been a tough road since then for all of us, but Jen is back home now. She is still seeing her doctors, and may need help for some time. But she's doing much better.
