Anxiety is defined as a feeling of fear or uneasiness about the uncertain future especially those unpleasant ones. This may lead into the development of anxiety disorder, which is known to be one of the most dreadful disorders around. An advanced case of irrational fear is called as anxiety disorder, or otherwise called panic disorder. Anxiety disorder has a most striking symptom which is a panic attack. Panic attacks are episodes of unexplainable surge of fear and anxiety that brings about different physical symptoms. Chest pains can be felt when panic attacks take place. It is described by most sufferers as a feeling of going crazy, heart attack, and almost fainting or dying.

Anxiety is considered as a mild form of fear, while an anxiety disorder is usually branded as a mental disorder. With psychological issues, the most obvious and effective type of treatment for anxiety disorders is the cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT. Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a therapy session that is composed of a combination of two kinds of therapies; behavioral and cognitive. CBT is a kind of therapy that aims to make sufferers realize the flaws in their thinking process and attempts to alter the behavior in the process. To make things clearer, here is what the name implies.

Cognitive: This is a type of therapy that is focused on the thought process of the sufferer. This therapy is commonly used for managing stress, anger, and stress-related disorders. Anxiety disorders are irrational fears over a place, person, or object; and these irrational fears are put in question in cognitive therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. If a sufferer, for instance, fears a particular place because he or she believes that being near to that place triggers the panic attack, the therapist will then ask him or her a question like "how sure are you that it will trigger?", and oftentimes, it is only the fear of the suffer about having another panic attack that causes the panic attack.

Behavioral: In cognitive behavioral therapy, the behavioral aspect takes control of the behavior during the altered mental states. This is based on the principle that behavior is being influenced heavily by emotions that are intense. The panic attack, for instance, may give the sufferer the urge to flee the place where the panic attack was triggered - this is something that cognitive behavioral therapy targets to reverse.

Commonly question about Effective Anxiety Disorder Treatments

Question :

What s the best, most effective treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder?

I know certain meds work better for certain people, but it seems like most meds aren t made for social anxiety disorder in the first place. But I believe a few are supposed to be effective. Which ones seem to work best overall? Thanks.
Answer :
The most commonly used ones are SSRI antidepressants. Amongst these, paroxetine has been the most studied, but fluoxetine, sertraline, citalopram, and escitalopram can also be effective in alleviating the worst of the symptoms. Venlafaxine can also be effective, but has not been studied for this condition. Another antidepressant, moclobemide, which is a RIMA ( reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase) is also licenced for social anxiety disorder. The older MAOIs can be effective too, but have quite severe side-effects and diet-restrictions. I ve also read that clonazepam, a benzodiazepine can be effective, but is very rarely used, so you d have to do some more research on this.
Question :

Is it possible to attend and graduate from college with social anxiety disorder?

I have been battling social anxiety disorder for the past five years, and have never found an effective treatment. I am now nearing my late twenties and have yet to pursue a college education. I suffer from panic attacks routinely, and I m frightened to death that during a project - that requires social interaction - I would be incapable of functioning.

If anyone who has gone through a similar situation could provide some feedback, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Answer :
Yes, this is a very treatable kind of problem, and people who struggle with it can still learn how to handle it, get over it, and move on to what they want to do in life.

The key is to learn how this problem works, and how you can respond in ways that will relieve it over time. Unfortunately, most people s instinctive reactions involve avoidance and self protection in ways that make the problem worse over time.

An excellent self help book on the subject is: Overcoming Social Anxiety and Shyness, by Gillian Butler. It s in paperback, available on amazon.
