Major depression is a type of a mental disorder that is characterized by low mood, low self-esteem, and loss of pleasure or interest in activities that were normally enjoyable. Other terms for this form of depression are clinical depression, major depressive disorder, unipolar disorder and unipolar depression.

Depression is considered as a disabling condition that affects an individual's general health, eating and sleeping habits, school or work, family, and friends. In the United States alone, sixty percent of those who died of suicide have depression, and three to four percent of people who are suffering from major depression commit suicide.

The Signs and Symptoms People who are suffering from this type of depression generally show a loss of pleasure that were once enjoyed and a low mood that encompasses all aspects of life. These people may be preoccupied with inappropriate regret or guilt, self-hatred, and feelings and thoughts or hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness. Other symptoms include difficulty in sleeping, withdrawal from social activities and situations, poor memory and concentration, suicide attempts, and thoughts of death. In severe cases, people who are depressed may experience the symptoms of psychosis, such as hallucinations and delusions.

Causes of Major Depression Psychological, social, and biological factors are said to play a role in causing depression. Psychological factors refer to the person's coping ability in response to problems and stress. Also, a distorted way of thinking and low self esteem has been linked with depression. Persons who are suffering from other psychological conditions such as schizophrenia and anxiety are also likely to suffer from depression.

Social factors include social isolation and poverty. A study has shown that those people who had experienced child abuse (emotional, sexual, physical, neglect) when they were young are more likely to develop major depression later in life. Other social factors that can contribute to the development of depression include death of a loved one, divorce or marital conflict, parental depression, financial problems, and family problems.

Question :

I have now been pot free for 3 months, when am i supposed to feel better?

I have been an avid marijuana smoker for most of my later teens, a daily smoker through my 20 s and toned it down (probably half) through age 35. I first started for the cool factor when i was 16. In my 20 s it was just a staple to help me with life long anxiety and depression. It always worked like a charm every time. I never lost a job for it or had any legal troubles. Nobody gave me heat over it because they saw how much better I was with just a toke here and there. I was never a mass user, staying ripped all day long. I just toked up a bit after work to relax after work. I was never much of a drinker. As I got older I was able to piece many of the benefits it gave to me.

First and foremost the greatest plus is that I do not remember my dreams in the morning. Since I was a kid I would have bad, crazy or chaotic etc... dreams throughout the week and weekends. I could rarely piece together any reason for the dreams. In the morning I would struggle to get up as my quality of sleep was very poor and in 8 hrs of sleep I felt I had 2-3 hrs. The dreams/dreaming would increase my anxiety throughout the day and the lack of sleep would create concentration issues at school. My parents told me, " It will go away when you get older." Lies.

Second, I (w/o marijuana) have continual racing thoughts. With just a toke or two I am actually able to have better concentration (math being the exception) on tasks at hand. I am much less likely to get distracted. Now of coarse if I use more than whats needed it will backfire and I have classic symptoms, huh, what, yeah.

Third, I never had much of any hobbies or likes growing up until I started toking on a number here and there. Since then I have attended automotive school, culinary and (until I had to stop smoking) was also taking classes towards my current major; music theory and education.

I have had to stop because I have been the unfortunate recipient of two car crashes (that were not my fault and I was not high ) and have landed myself in pain management. I have had 2 surgeries and have put off going to PM for several years because I knew they would drug test me.

I just cant take the negative effects of not smoking marijuana anymore, especially the dreaming. It drives me nuts. They gave me ambien which helps me get to sleep (which really was not a problem) but it s my quality of sleep throughout the night the sucks. I have quit playing guitar, piano and drums and have no drive to even try to play them. I am on pain medication which helps some. I do not believe it is the pain medication causing these problems because I had to stop smoking from the summer of 04- 05 for a job and had the same problems then, just as when I was a kid.

Ive asked about a sleep study and they tell me that dreaming is a natural part of life. I don t care. It s not any part of life that I want. I didn t have these problems several months ago and I want them gone, NOW! I know what to do, but that will get me kicked from pain management and I need their help. I put off getting pain meds for a long time and now that I have them I m between a rock and a hard place. The pain is too great to be without them; I ll lose my job. Now that I hav nt had decent night of sleep in months Im stating to look like a truck ran me over.

I try to control the dream, I try to get up and shake it off, I try to sleep differently, I dont eat weird food late at night, I dont drink (I wont say never) at night, Ive read other s blogs and books and yahoo answers questions and I only see one answer. But again I can t jeopardize losing my pain meds. AAAAHHHHHHH!!

Any useful help would be appreciated. Please no dumb answers to refer me to rehab or church or to off myself. Thanks
Answer :
You are 100% correct. For some people it is a very good treatment for depression and insomnia among other things. Obviously if a person abuses it, then it is bad just like alcohol or pain pills. I quit smoking for one reason only, it s illegal and I cannot afford to lose my job over it. If it weren t for that I d still smoke daily. I say if you aren t concerned with the legal or employment aspects of it then don t fool yourself into thinking it is making you a better or healthier person by quitting. That s total BS and I m living proof. I m the exact same person only I can t sleep nearly as well. And of course using a vaporizer or eating takes away the only real negative part of smoke itself.
